Off The Wall
by Amelie Gastaut, Jean-Pierre Criqui
In the mid-1960s,
San Francisco rock, or psychedelic rock, emerged in Haight-Ashbury,
fueled by the use of hallucinogenic drugs like LSD.
Groups and musicians such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane,
Big Brother and the Holding Company, Santana, and others rose to prominence
and in turn influenced musical groups around the United States
and in other parts of the world, from the Velvet Underground
to Sly and the Family Stone to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
The posters announcing the concerts that were held at places such
as the
fabled Fillmore and the Avalon Ballroom matched the revolutionary
music
with their brilliant, swirling colors and hallucinogenic imagery.
Created by some of the most inventive graphic designers of the era,
including the "Big Five" of psychedelic
poster design
Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, and Stanley
"Mouse" Miller
these groundbreaking posters reflect a singular moment in the history
of American culture.
This book features more than one hundred of the most striking and
unconventional posters from this memorable period,
stunningly printed in five colors to best reproduce the
rich hues and dizzying patterns of the originals.
The accompanying text covers the history of psychedelic rock music,
explains the influences of Art Nouveau, Op Art, and other art movements
on the poster design,
and discusses the contributions of dozens of artists to the medium.
120 color illustrations.

"The
twentieth century's most radical literary and artistic movements0
have tended to overturn one another in rapid succession.
The revolution took various names as it proceeded:
Cubist, Futurist, Suprematist, Constructivist,
Synchromist, Modernist,
Dadaist, Surrealist, Abstract Expressionist, Existentialist, Situationist,
Beat, Psychedelic, Pop, Op, New Wave,
and _______________(fill in the blank with the name of tomorrow's
movement).
Modern artists challenged tradition, disregarded previously accepted
ideals of morality and beauty,
dissolved distinctions and categories, and refuted reason at every
turn.
Art in the twentieth century has been
a defiant exhibition of wisdom."
"Twentieth-century
art has often made a direct statement against the materialism and
militarism of the times.
Artistic protests ranged from Picasso's contorted, suffering images
in Guernica
to Jimi Hendrix's screaming guitar version of the U.S. national anthem
to the two female performance artists, one American and one Vietnamese,
who tied themselves together with a twelve-foot rope for an entire
year.
This century has seen especially murderous acts or orchestrated in
the name of the greater glory of humanity,
and many artists have gone to the barricades, trying to get our attention
in order to expose the deceit
of the governments and profiteers and to offer alternatives to the
barbarity.
"These
artists have stood naked before us, revealing their own nightmares,
which share the common terrors of the spirit of darkness."
Excerpts From--CrazyWisdom by Wes Nisker.
