Tantra,
Kama Sutra, and the Tao of Loving
Tantra is a Sanskrit word
of two parts. The prefix, tan, means to expand, join or weave.
The latter part, tra, means tool. Therefore, the definition
of the term Tantra has a two-fold meaninga tool to expand,
liberate, and bring together. What is known about Tantra is
that the most common form is preserved through such writings as the
Kama Sutra (probably written around the time of Christ) and the Ananga
Ranga (a collection of erotic works from around 1100 A.D.) The purest
form of Tantra was not passed down in writing, but only by way of
initiations and personal instruction.-(see warning below)
Although Taoism (pronounced
Dow-ism), as a philosophy or religion in China, developed later than
the Hindu religion of India, both traditions embraced some form of
sacred sexuality. The Chinese sexual arts were developed by the Yellow
Emperor (Huang-Ti) and his three immortal ladies long
before Taoism, which means that although Hinduism is older than Taoism,
the Chinese sexual arts are still as ancient as Tantra.
The Kama Sutra was written
by a noble man who saw life as consisting of dharma (spiritual substance),
artha (financial substance), and kama (sensual substance). Kama is
said to be the enjoyment of appropriate objects by the five
senses
assisted by the mind, together with the soul. Although
Tantra might appear to be an art of sexual pleasuring and the Kama
Sutra a manual of sexual positions, the real goal of kama is to cultivate
love and reverence for the person with whom the Tantric pleasure.

A
Gentle Warning!
It
has been our experience at 60s & Further. that these ancient and
esoteric practices and techniques can be dangerous to those inexperienced
and naive to the incredible power they hold. We have known several
people that have practiced Kundalini Yoga, Tantra, Rebirthing and
other modalities, and have completely 'burned out' their brains, nervous
systems and emotional bodies. Not that you shouldn't explore these
sciences, but if you are serious and truly committed in learning them,
you indeed, need to seek the guidance of a true and bonafide instructor,
mentor or guru.
Further, if
you choose to undertake rituals and practices that harness forces
that you cannot even perceive, it can be as dangerous as Russian Roulette.
For example, in the use of Mantra, you are interacting with very powerful
forces, whether it is Tantra or Magick. To use a Mantra in ignorance
(or by simply reading a book) can be foolish, especially if you are
doing so in order to fulfill desire, lust, anger, pride, ambition,
envy, jealousy, etc. Just be very cautious and enjoy the adventure
of learning, exploring and your own passionate discovery.
I am
going to start doing a serious study on 'Sacred Sexuality' in our
Tao of Sacred Sexuality
with articles,
insights, links, and references. so please, when you have a chance,

Tantra
Sexual
Secrets:
The Alchemy of Ecstasy
by Nik Douglas
and Penny Slinger.
Highly
recommended!
A remarkably complete book stocked with the knowledge of esoteric Asian
traditions never before seen by Western eyes.
I studied this book for two years in Taos, New Mexico. It is priceless.
A definitive guide to sex and mysticism. A vast and impeccable work
of ancient sacred sexuality.
An awesome collection of erotic art and illustrations based on images
in private collections and museums. The wisdom of the sages
and everything you wanted to know about Tantra. If you are just beginning
to study Tantra and want a clear, detailed, and a totally translatable
text in which to start your study, I highly recommend this book.
About the Author's
Nik Douglas, an authority on Oriental art
and writing, studied Oriental philosophy, art, medicine, and related
sexual practices while living in the Himalayas. He also studied with
Indian physicians, adepts of tantra, and Tibetan lamas, mastering Sanskrit
and the Tibetan language in order to translate these Oriental texts.
He lives in Anguilla, British West Indies.
Penny Slinger is one of Europe's leading
erotic artists. A graduate of the Chelsea College of Fine Arts, her
work has been hailed as progressive eroticism that explores female sexuality.
She resides in California.
The
Secret Dakini Oracle Tarot Deck
by Nik Douglas and Penny Slinger.
A wonderful deck full of ancient symbolism and
galactic imagery.
Be sure to buy the book with the deck.
It is unique and awesome!
Not frivolous or in la-la land.
A totally cool tool for a study in Tantra and Tantric symbolism.
-LionHeart-
Contains 22 Major Arcana,
40 Minor Arcana representing the four elements, and three additional
cards invoking Past, Present, and Future Cards are full-color
collages by Penny Slinger
The Tantric Dakini Oracle is a system of divination based on the authors'
work in the Ranipur Jharial Temple of Orissa, India. The temple contains
stone carvings of 64 Dakinis, ancient symbolic representations of the
female principles of intuitive wisdom. The Dakinis are the guardians
of the deeper mysteries of the self, and it is through them that the
secrets of inner transformation are opened.
Nik Douglas, a scholar of both Sanskrit and Tibetan, has drawn upon
his extensive knowledge of Tantric mystical teachings to create a modern
synthesis of their system of divination. The 65 cards in the deck are
a collage of surrealistic images representing symbols and archetypes
that are designed to affect both conscious and subconscious levels of
perception. Created by artist Penny Slinger, the cards are a mirroring
device that evokes subtle memories, sentiments, desires, or fears. Mediation
on the images of The Tantric Dakini Oracle puts the reader in contact
with the energies of the Dakinis, opening a path to one's inner world
and enhancing the user's faculties of clairvoyance and visualization.
The oracle also uses two layouts to release individual psychic power-the
Tree of Life and The Great Universe Map. The Tree of Life depicts the
chakra centers of the yoga body to engage the kundalini energies of
the individual diviner. The Great Universe Map explores the astrological
influences upon individuals and situations." (Amazon Review)
Secret
Dakini Oracle
by Nik Douglas
Although the book is meant as a companion to the deck of the same name,
I felt that there ought to have been an extended glossary for those
who just happend to fall on the book by accident - without the cards.
The rich symbolism gleaned from many schools of thought and philosophies
means there is something for everyone.
A particularly visually appetising book - with the splendid colour of
the cards. Don't pass this by.
For their system of divination, the authors drew upon extensive study
of the 64 Dakinis of the Ranipur Jharial Temple in Orisa, India, which
honor intuitive wisdom.
I find
that any book or CD by Harish Johari or Nik Douglas and Penny Slinger
are invaluable as Tantric resources. This
particular book and CD are powerful and beautiful work. Tread lightly
here. This is a path of power and desire. Take my advice please, do
not be led into any New Age dreams or fantasies about the real nature
of Tantra. Tantra can be seductive and there are teachers out there
who will try to lure you in and manipulate you with their own sexual
agendas. Be careful but do enjoy the Beauty, Music, Philosophy and Laughter.

Tools
For Tantra
by Harish Johari.
Buy this book, read it carefully, reflect on what you find, assimililte
what you can, then move on and don't look back!
There is much about Tantra and Hinduism and it's nature that is valuable
in this book. You need to know it and what this "thread" of
Tantra is about.
For the web of life is created by many such threads.
Look for yourself on page 26 table 5 to understand the true nature of
this Tantra: The Ten Karmas of Mantras!
Look and see for yourself what this path is about.
Only the peaceful mantras of Shanti Karma do not bind you to the invisible
"thread" of the dark side of Tantra.
Sounds of Tantra :
Mantra Meditation Techniques from Tools for Tantra (Audio CD)
by Harish Johari
In Sounds of Tantra, Harish Johari demonstrates the correct intonation
of mantras, the words of power used when meditating on the beautiful
geometric paintings of yantras. Regular chanting or listening to these
mantras is considered a potent means of surmounting obstacles, attaining
wealth, love, health, and freedom from fear. This two-CD set is a useful
companion to Joharis book Tools for Tantra and can also be used
as a background for meditation.
"The Art of Everyday Ecstasy...."
When
I got my first book by Margot Anand, I thought, "just another New
Age dream/wish book." After I finished reading "The Art
of Everday Ecstasy" I wanted to re-create or "re-invent"
the way I looked at the world, how I perceived myself and my world,
and how all my relationships should be, could be, if only the willingness
to follow the path became a very real comittment. A willing partner
experienced in the Arts of Love is extremely helpful, with the same
intention's for growth and mutual loving ecstasy, or if you both are
new to the possibilities of a totally fulfilling relationship or how
to enhance the one you have..would find these books useful. -LionHeart-

How to nurture creativity, healing, passion, and love within yourself
and your relationships. A beautiful book for any age!"Ecstasy is
an often misunderstood word and I admire Margot Anand for broadening
its definition. I recommend The Art of Everyday Ecstasy to anyone who

The
New Art of Sexual Ecstasy :
Following the Path of Sacred Sexuality
by Margot Anand
The
Art of Sexual Ecstasy
by Margo Anand
This book can solve a lot of problems. Couples with failing relationships
typically communicate little, have few common activities, and have poor
or no sex. Learning Tantra is a fun activity that teaches couples to
communicate and trust. Furthermore, Tantra gives couples a common activity
that makes them feel special. They develop intimacy that their friends
do not have.
Tantra encourages fitness. No one need be musclebound to enjoy Tantra,
but fitness makes Tantra more pleasurable. At the same time some Tantric
exercises are quite physically undemanding. Unfit individuals can enjoy
Tantra also.
The book is well-written and well-illustrated, and discusses many of
Ms. Anand's experiences. It discusses Tantric sexual techniques, but
does not discuss Tantric history and mythology in detail.
Ms. Anand's book first asks the reader to examine their own sexuality
in terms of Tantric principles. Two chapters discuss opening lines of
communication and trust between partners, and developing skills for
enhancing intimacy.
Sexual
Ecstasy:
The Art of Orgasm
by Margot Anand
Gloriously illustrated, concise guide to a new stage in the pleasure
and power of orgasm for men and women.
In Sexual Ecstasy, Margot Anand offers a magnificently illustrated,
concise, and step-by-step guide to giving magical orgasms to your partner,
male or female.
Sexual
Ecstasy will:
Bring fresh awareness to sexually sensitive areas and new ways of caressing
these areas.
Open the way for ecstatic states of orgasm.
Help reveal and dissolve psychological and emotional blocks inhibiting
the flow of orgasmic energy.
Enhance communication between love partners, deepening their sense of
intimacy.
Teach you, the woman, how to take responsibility for your sexual well-being.
Teach you, the man, how to bring a woman to orgasmic ecstasy.
"Margot Anand is sexual
magic.
She lives, breathes, and moves Tantric traditions into practical meditations
for lovers."
Tantra
: The Art of Conscious Loving
by Charles Muir, Caroline Muir
If you are looking for a book that is just about the sex aspect, this
is not it. This book is deep, and approaches intimacy from all perspectives,
not just a purely sexual one. The thing that I like best about it is
that it has enabled my husband and I to talk about things in our relationship
in a non-confrontational way, and it gives us a vocabulary to discuss
things that are sometimes hard to say. I think everyone can benefit
from this perspective on learning to connect with another person, no
matter what your relationship status or sexual preference. (Amazon Review)

Pathways to Understanding Tantra...
Shambhala
Encyclopedia of Yoga
by Georg Phd Feuerstein
Any student or aspiring student of Yoga will want to know more about
not only the practices of Yoga but also its history and spirituality.
One of the best places to turn is to Georg Feuerstein's acclaimed Shambhala
Encyclopedia of Yoga. With more than 100 illustrations (such as the
many asana postures and chakra centers) and entries on everything from
the Bhagavad Gita to Swami Vivekananda and from the Aryan invasion theory
to biofeedback, you can't go wrong. Extensive cross-references also
facilitate searches for both English and Sanskrit versions of terms.
Georg Feuerstein's "The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga" was
originally published 10 years ago, in an abbreviated version called
"The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga." This updated and greatly
expanded offering is destined to become a classic. The more than 2000
entries are organized in Sanskrit with easy-to-use English cross-references
and the text is interspersed with many wonderful illustrations.
Virtually anything that one wants to know about yoga is contained in
these pages, from biographical listings (Sri Aurobindo, the founder
of Integral yoga) to ancient gods (Kali, the destroyer of illusion)
and simple poses (Bhujanga-asana, the Cobra). Feuerstein's research
is exhaustive, impeccable and fascinating--"Duhkha originally meant
'having a bad axle hole,' but early on came to signify 'sorrow,' 'suffering,'
or 'pain.'" The writing is lively despite all the detail, and overflows
with the author's unbounded enthusiasm for his subject. It reads like
a good story not, thank God, like an academic tome.
The
Mystery of the Golden Blossom:
Christmas Message 1971-72

A broad and fascinating journey through Alchemy, Taoism, Buddhism and
others, as the author relates important aspects of the Path to the Self-realization
of the Being. Filled with stories and personal experiences, this book
explains in an intimate fashion many fundamental details needed by every
aspirant, including examinations of many different lustful psychological
formations or obstacles to true liberation.
Samael's great alchemical text contains the knowledge of how to transform
oneself psyschologically and spiritually through the wise utilization
of the sexual energy.
The book has numerous illustrations and pictures to assist in the vast
esoterism of alchemy and white tantrism.

Arcane Ten Sexual Energy Ecstasy:
A
Guide to the Ultimate Intimate Sexual Experience
by David Alan Ramsdale and Ellen Jo Dorfman.
What a fantastic gift this book is. In a time where we as a culture
seem to only want distractions, this book reminds us that in order to
achieve ecstacy we need only to look within. Our "modern"
society seems to have trouble talking truthfully about sex. We still,
for some mysterious reason, think of sex as "dirty" or "obscene."
Why? Who knows? But for those who have open minds and accept sex as
truly natural, this book can surely help you achieve bliss. Containing
enough information to keep any couple or individual engrossed for years,
Sexual Energy Ecstacy is a priceless investment. Magificently written
and illustrated, David and Ellen Ramsdale should be envyed for their
experience, and thanked for their courage and ability to share it. Any
couple who adopts their techniques will expand their relationship far
into the joyous state of Pure Love
An easy translatable work on sexual fullfillment-an integrated study
of Eastern and Western sexuality. A virtual compendium of awareness,
sensitivity, conciseness and consciousness.
Red
Hot Tantra:
Erotic Secrets of Red Tantra for Intimate, Soul-to-Soul Sex and Ecstatic,
Enlightened Orgasms
by David Ramsdale, Cynthia W. Gentry
Red Hot Tantra will be the first book about red tantra the hot, lusty
version of tantric sex. This book drops the robes of holiness to offer
the first shamelessly erotic, blissfully sensual, and devoutly naughty
tantric guide. When most people think of tantric sex, they think of
white tantra, which was developed by monks and encourages dispassionate
remoteness. Red tantra, on the other hand, is an ancient, orgasm-positive,
woman-centered tradition based on erotic goddess worship.
This book combines erotic stories, instructions for a tantric experience,
and a commentary on the insights dramatized by the story and experienced
by the reader.
About the Author's
David Ramsdale is an authority on tantric sex and the author of the
130,000 copy seller Sexual Energy Ecstasy. He has appeared on television
and radio more than fifty times and is recognized as one of the top
three tantra authors in the United States.
Cynthia W. Gentry is a fiction writer and screenwriter whose short stories
have appeared in Area i, The Montserrat Review and Reed Magazine. She
has also written for indieWIRE.com and Dailygossip.com. She is a graduate
of Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley's
Graduate School of Journalism.
Tantra
: Path of Ecstasy
by Georg Phd Feuerstein
Consider for a moment that the Dalai Lama is a tantric adept, and those
visions of sexual bliss that the word "tantra" conjures up
quickly dissolve. Tantra is more than the sex play of popular articles
and books. Georg Feuerstein, authority of the yogic traditions, conjures
up a much richer world of Hindu cosmology, philosophy, and theology.
Tantra is a form of devotionalism, in which ritual sounds, gestures,
and actions figure prominently. Reverence of the guru as god also plays
a part, but Feuerstein tempers our suspicion by repeating the admonitions
of tantric texts down through the ages to choose carefully. As much
prudence must also go into reflection on the disciple's own person,
who engages in strict yogic discipline designed to conquer the six enemies:
desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and envy. Feuerstein draws on
the ancient texts to describe the tantric path in great detail, including
realization of the subtle body, directing energy through the chakras,
and, yes, sex. Taken together, tantra becomes a vivid, multifaceted
path to self-realization. --Brian Bruya
From Publishers Weekly
Feuerstein has attempted a daunting task, defining Tantric Yoga drawn
from Hindu and not Tibetan Buddhist sources. To do this, he has assembled
a wide-ranging compendium of Hindu, Tantric and Shaivite texts almost
impossible to find in one place elsewhere. To plunge into this book
is to find yourself rushing down the sacred River Ganges through the
heart of India. Like a sophisticated travelogue, it brings into sharp
focus the rich tapestry of the Indian ecstatic life and the exotic practices
of Tantric Yoga that take place, metaphorically, on the banks of this
Queen of rivers. The inner eye is challenged with mystical beasts bathing
in the waters; holy men daubed in ashes undertaking bizarre and often
previously never-before-seen Tantric rituals; the inner ear is filled
with the rhythmic, pulsating chant of Om, and all its associated Sanskrit
sounds; the senses are awash with meditative visions. It is a passage
through Indian spiritual life that may be too sophisticated for the
casual tourist, although for those who have passed this way before,
it is a comprehensive and provocative commentary on the basic and advanced
precepts of Tantric yoga. Written with literate modesty and erudition,
this book is an invaluable resource.
The
Tao of Loving
Before
I had even began a study of Tantra, I discovered the books by Jolan
Chang on the Tao of Loving...not only have I practiced the techniques
in his books, but they work, and I have been able to have a more fulfilling
sexual experience as a man and a more blissful experience for my partners.
The techniques do take practice, patience and surrender. Commiting to
the self-discipline necessary to "pleasure your partner" over
and over again-while simply keeping yourself "warm and loving"
is an honoring to the goddess, the yoni, and the Sacred Feminine.

The
Tao of Love and Sex:
The Ancient Chinese Way to Ecstasy
by Jolan Chang.
This book is definately a must for those interested in integrating Spirituality
and Sexuality!
Jolan Chang explains how the ancient philosophy of Taoism can be applied
to modern sex techniques. "I have learned by experience that the
most effective way to secure sufficient love for both men and women
is to show women how to influence men gently to become more adequate
lovers."-Jolan Chang
I have had this in my library for years and was taught an enormous amount
by the reading of it and following its techniques. "Where the young
fumble and flounder among the new freedoms hunting for beauty and sexual
love." The art of lovemaking regarded as basic therapy of living
in the Taoist Medical Canon-burn topically to those in the West. Loosen
up folks, relax and enjoy with awareness. The Mayflower has long vanished!
The
Tao of the Loving Couple :
True Liberation through the Tao
by Jolan Chang.
Jolan Chang, a chinese living in Stockholm, Sweden, gives a profound
introduction into the ancient chinese philosophy of taoism and from
this philosophy he derives a new way of looking at both love, making
love and having sex.
He teaches, that the western way of "chasing" orgasm is unhealthy
and contradicts the laws of nature, since "exaggerated" ejaculation
can have some negative impact on males' well-being and health. According
to Chang, "coerced" ejaculation is the most wide-spread cause
of impotence. He says, that, instead of trying to reach an orgasm by
any means, you should rather try to enjoy hour-lasting extasy with your
partner, when you are sexually united with him or her, and that this
will have an incredible positive effect on both your physical an mental
health, and you will feel much better than after any orgasm. Furthermore
this way of making love would reconcile man woman and end the "gender-war",
since through taoism the woman will finally get the amount of love,
care and physical satisfaction she needs, and the man is no longer forced
to "prove" he is a "real man", since his fear of
"failing" is taken away from him. Also no woman will any longer
regard herself as "frigid", when she realizes that sexual
satisfaction does not necessarily go along with an orgasm. It is to
be well-noticed, that these ideas were developed in ancient China 500
B.C. !
In the second part of the book, Chang gives valuable tips concernig
healthy nutrition, physical exercise and ethical behavior towards enviroment
and nature, also based on taoist ideas.
The companion to The Tao of Love and Sex. The Village Voice praised
this book: "It encourages great sexual generosity." This is
a warm and intimate exploration into intimacy and sexual companionship.
Highly recommended!

WESTERN MEDICINE has a number of categories into which it classifies

The
Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love
by Sarita Choudmury. DVD.
Starring: Sarita Choudhury, Naveen Andrews
Director: Mira Nair
Kama Sutra is the story of a young woman named Maya (the stunning Indira
Varma) who has always been lower on the social scale than her well-born
friend Tara (Sarita Choudhury), and has always lived in Tara's shadow,
wearing her used clothes and being made to feel inferior. When Tara
is betrothed to the handsome King Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews, from The
English Patient), Tara sneaks into the king's tent on the eve of the
wedding and seduces him. Later, after being trained to master the Kama
Sutra's many "lessons of love," Maya will be the king's courtesan,
and emotions will run high between the former best friends. But the
plot is of secondary importance here (a fact that resulted in many mixed
reviews), and so Kama Sutra works best as a colorful and irresistibly
sexy story that is worth seeing just for the startling beauty of the
film and its cast.
We thought this film was going to be frivolous and perhaps exploitive,
we were wrong. It is lovely and worth buying.
"Knowing love, I will allow all things to come and go. To be as
supple as the wind, and take everything that comes with great courage.
Life is right in any case. My heart is as open as the sky."

The
Kama Sutra
by Vatsyayana, S. C. Upadhyaya
Composed by Vatsyayana in the fourth century B.C., the Kama Sutra explores
sexuality as an integral part of human existence. Arguing that happiness
and moral duty (dharma) depend on elaborate social ritual to satisfy
the essential needs of life, the Kama Sutra describes the practices,
rituals, and lore of the erotic (kama) in human relations, both straight
and gay. The only truly authentic, complete translation from the ancient
Sanskrit, this definitive and beautifully designed edition places this
enduring work in its true historical, cultural, and religious context
as a celebration of courtship and love. In addition to its famous catalog
of positions, or "embraces," it features Vatsyayana's most
edifying revelations on sexuality, women, marriage, pleasure, and more.
A complete glossary of Sanskrit terms is included, as well as photographs
of the famous 11th-century sculptures from the temple at Khajuraho.
The
Complete Kama Sutra
by Alain Danielou (Translator).
The world's oldest and most widely read guide to the pleasures and techniques
of sex. The Kama Sutra was compiled in the fourth century A.D. by a
Brahmin and religious scholar named Vatsyayana, who worked from texts
dating back to the fourth century B.C.E. The Kama Sutra encompasses
so much, including marriage, adultery, prostitution, group sex, sadomasochism,
male and female homosexuality, and transvestism. It is an open and highly
developed expression of the erotic.
The
Complete Illustrated Kama Sutra
by Lance Dane
Written almost 2,000 years ago, the Kama Sutra deals with all aspects
of sexual life, and how to best achieve ecstatic expression of life's
beauty. Augmented with 250 illustrations and works of art gathered from
museums and collections around the world, the result is a dazzling and
sensuous reading experience through which the teachings of the Kama
Sutra spring to life.
I highly recommend the Kama Sutra but not to people who are looking
for the book by reputation as sex sex sex. The book is very much about
sex, but more about the whole world of etiquette surrounding male female
relations. Virgin marriages (virgin women anyway) are taken for granted
and one whole section is about devirginizing the woman AFTER THE MARRIAGE.
The advice is very good because it tells how to go about building relationships
not how to have one night stands.
Get this book to study and think about and view it as relationship advice
and not physical sex advice. So much of the book is about communication
and is dead on that it is no wonder it is a classic and likewise shows
how important communication is to good sex. In terms of this specific
translation, just go for a modern translation of the whole book. A picture
book of the positions is not the Kama Sutra and the Richard Burton translation
is very stilted. This translation works and pictures are reproductions
of Indian art not photos of models, so they are less likely to contribute
to dissatisfaction or distance with the partner. As with all sexy books
avoid used copies.

Path of the Mystic Lover:
Baul Songs of Passion and Ecstasy
by Bhaskar Bhattacharyya, Nik Douglas (Editor),
Penny Slinger (Illustrator), Penny Singer (Illustrator)
This beautiful book mixes various medias such as art, poetry, photography,

book is very moving and deeply sincere. A must-read for Tantric initiates
of all levels.
Kali's
Child:
The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna
by Jeffrey John Kripal
"The 19th-century Bengali mystic Ramakrishna played a major role
in the development of Hinduism and is regarded as a modern saint. Yet
he remains an enigma to followers unable to reconcile his saintly status
with his eroticized language and actions. In this work, Jeffrey J. Kripal
attempts to untangle the paradox. He demonstrates that Ramakrishna's
famous mystical experiences were driven by erotic energies that he neither
fully accepted nor understood. In a substantial new preface to this
second edition, Kripal answers his critics, addresses the controversy
the book has generated in India, and traces the genealogy of his work
in the history of psychoanalytic discourse on mysticism, Hinduism, and
Ramakrishna himself. Kali's Child has already proven to be provocative,
groundbreaking, and immensely enjoyable.
"Only a few books make such a major contribution to their field
that from the moment of publication things are never quite the same
again. Kali's Child is such a book."(Amazon Review)
Spiritual
Sex:
The Secrets of Tantra from the Ice Age to the New Millennium
by Nik Douglas
"A liberating and fascinating introduction to the historical evolution
and practice of Tantric sexual ecstasy. This book goes a long way toward
promoting a healthy understanding between men and women of their differing
sexual personalities. Intriguing and candid, Nik Douglas' "Spiritual
Sex: Secrets of Tantra from the Ice Age to the New Mellennium"
deftly explores how the concept of consciousness expansion, human sexuality
and spirituality are intricately bound. His detailed review encompasses
not only the historical origins and nature of Tantra, but also its diffusion
and practice in the Judeo-Christian sphere. The author's thorough presentation
of Tantric sexual techniques, culminating in "The Tantric Great
Rite of the Five Essentials", offers a no-nonsense guide for serious
seekers of sexual ecstasy. The abiding relevance of "The Science
of Tantra" and "The New Tantric Sexual Paradigm" is clearly
articulated in the closing chapter. The works useful "Chronology:
People and Events Pertinent to Tantra, in a Historical Context",
its exhaustive bibliography and comprehensive listing of germane Internet
sites render this scholarly book an invaluable reference tool. Highly
recommended reading." (Amazon Review)
Goddesses,
Whores, Wives, and Slaves:
Women in Classical Antiquity
by Sarah Pomeroy
"Grim picture of the status of women in Greek and Roman society.
A scientific exploration based on classical marriage contracts, legal
and medical texts, demographic data (on female infanticide) and philosophical
and literary works (Plato, Aristoteles, Homeros and others).
The status of Aspasia (Pericles' hetaera) was an exception. Women were
confined to the domestic sphere, totally inferior to men and the subject
of systematic misogyny by poets and philosophers.
The author also elucidates why the Isis cult was persecuted by emperor
Tiberius.
This is a model study. A necessary work not to be missed by readers
interested in classical history. It is a look at that section of ancient
culture that didn't take part in philosophical discussions or political
decision making, but that composed the majority on which the first democracy
- for a minority - was built. Work by Catherine Salles and Bettina Eva
Stumpp on the same subject is also a compelling read. " (Amazon

Lust
for Enlightenment: Buddhism and Sex
by John Stevens
"Over the centuries, Buddhism has responded to sexuality in a variety
of fascinating ways, sometimes suppressing the sexual urge, sometimes
sublimating it, sometimes cultivating it, and, on the highest levels,
transcending it. This book reveals how Buddhists, beginning with Buddha
himself, relate to the "inner fire" that drives humankind.
Included are chapters on the Buddha's love life before his enlightenment,
and his later relationships with women; the tantric approach to sex
among Buddhists of ancient India, Tibet, China, and Japan; Zen in the
art of love, and a positive discussion of women and Buddhism."
